Jane Holt - Executive Director


Jane, a retired nondenominational minister, is the Executive Director for the Salt Lake Center for Engaging Community and the coordinator for the Utah Civility and Community 2011 initiative. Jane has been a community activist for many years, working in the at large community and in her own neighborhood. Jane has 20 years experience as a speaker, teacher, and facilitator. She has organized and participated in community small group conversations that encourage participants to explore values and attitudes with regard to community issues.

Jane holds a strong belief that we will become a more vibrant community and nation by reaching out to others and together examining how we interact, and by making changes that will enrich our personal and community experience.

She is also working on community engagement with the Canyon Rim Community Connection, an ad-hoc committee to the Canyon Rim Citizens Association, which focuses on building relationships by offering public gatherings that support and encourage resident’s participation and interaction in their neighborhood communities.



Steve Prather, M.D. - Director of Community Well-being


Steve brings a wealth of experience in the area of health to his work with communities. Earlier in his career, he was a practicing OB/GYN physician, and later a consultant in the clinical quality improvement world. He helped pioneer the patient-centered care movement in America, and has designed and conducted adult learning seminars. He is committed to supporting communities in creating a culture of integrated health and wellbeing.

Steve is author of Behavioral Types and the Art of Patient Care as well as The New Health Partners. He served on the Pew Health Professions Commission at Duke University.



Ben Mates - Director of Sustainability


Ben Mates is a community activist involved with creating and sustaining healthy, resilient communities. Ben is Operations Manager for The Robert G. Hemingway Foundation, a private family foundation. Ben’s work with the Hemingway Foundation has brought him into partnership with non-profit organizations such as The Hunger Project and Berkana Institute and their initiatives to empower communities to use available resources to create their desired future.

He has participated in the annual Bioneers Conference each year since 2001, and has been on the Salt Lake Bioneers Conference Planning Committee since 2009.

Ben has hosted annual Sustainability Summits in Salt Lake in the fall of 2008 and 2009 and late winter 2011. Ben is a long-time student of whole systems thinking, sustainability, and human and environmental health. Ben lives in Salt Lake City, takes frequent bicycle rides, and enjoys skiing and hiking in the mountains around Salt Lake. He is a vegetarian, a vegetable gardener and a long-time member and supporter of food co-ops, food buying clubs and community-supported agriculture. Ben is married and has two adult children.



Tenneson Woolf -- Director of Change, Leadership, and Dialogue

I am a facilitator. I design and lead meetings. To get people interacting with each other -- learning together, building relationships, and focused on projects. From strategic planning for boards to large conference design. Living systems, self-organization, and emergence inspire my work. It’s all participative. Helps us all get to the heart of it.
